From the mountainous surroundings to hilarious auto renditions, “Cars” is a feast for the eyes and funnybone.

DVD Review: “Eight Below” is exciting and the arctic photography is stunning, it’s just a little bit too long. “Eight Below” tells the harrowing story of a dogsled team left chained outside a research station when the humans pull out in a hurry. The guide who used and loved them wants to return to rescue them but is voted down: Winter has set in and all flights are canceled until spring. The dogs encounter danger at every turn, surviving for nearly six months while the dogsled guide and his colleagues join forces to mount a daring rescue mission.

DVD Review: Terence Malik brings us a fresh look at “The New World” in a beautiful, but overly long film. You would be hard pressed to find a film with a more authentic sense of period than “The New World.” The film strips away all the lore from the well known story of Pocahontas and her tribe and the English settlers at Jamestown, and imagines how new and strange these people must have seemed to one another. If the Indians stared in disbelief at the English ships, the English were no less awed by the somber beauty of the new land and its people. They called the Indians “the naturals” of the new lands. Watching the film feels as if you have stepped back in time, to another rhythm and another way of thinking.

Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl

DVD Title: Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl
DVD Release Date: December 2, 2003
Actors: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport
Rating: 4 Stars
[Buy From Amazon.com]

DVD Review: You won’t need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you’ve experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There’s a galleon’s worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp’s androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor’s daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack’s nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he’s made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we’ve come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts!
